Step into history at Gather Place Museum with us, situated in the historic AME Church of Yardley (est. 1877), right near the scenic Delaware River and the historic Delaware Canal. Explore the origins of Yardley, originally known as Yardleyville, where the strategic “Boatyard lot” once sat at the lower end of the village, so close to the Yardley Ferry bustling with activity and rich narratives. Take a little walk with us  (on good weather days of course), around this little-known area in this Historic District of Yardley.

🔍 Highlights of this Gather Place Museum "Bring History to Life!" program include:

· Learning about the rich history of Yardley, originally established in 1682 by Quaker William Yeardley and transformed into Yardleyville by his nephew, Thomas Yardley.

• Explore the transformation of the Boatyard lot, once central to the Historic Delaware Canal’s trade and travel, into a significant meeting place for African American worshippers since 1817.
• Discover documents, photos, and artifacts that reveal the once vibrant and overlooked African American community in historic Yardleyville.
• Learn about Mary Derry, the oldest known African American resident of Yardley Borough, whose family's presence spans seven generations, enriching our local heritage.
• Celebrate the establishment of the AME Church in 1877, a vital part of Yardley’s legacy, learn about this site and other “Yardleyville” and Bucks County, Pennsylvania Underground Railroad links!

 This historical lecture presentation, is in honor of the American Revolution patriots of African Descent who served, suffered and sacrificed during the Valley Forge, Pennsylvania Encampment 1777-1778.  Also, these American Revolution patriots are recognized during this presention; Crispus Attucks, Salem Poor, James Armistead Lafayette, Marquis De Lafayette, John Paul Jones, John Adams, and Paul Revere. 

Commemorating Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass abolitionist and women’s suffrage movement pioneers (women’s right to vote). Learn about their fascinating connections to Bucks County!

The African-American Suffragists History Forgot; Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells (just to name a few of the many other women to learn about.)

Experience Harriet Tubman’s story in this one-woman, four-scene, historical-based reenactment, created and performed by Gather Place Museum’s Shirley Lee Corsey. Corsey’s portrayal vividly captures Tubman’s life journey, from her childhood as “Minty” to her later years as the renowned “Moses” of her people. Through subtle costume changes reflecting each time period, Corsey brings audiences face-to-face with Tubman’s bravery, compassion, and relentless pursuit of freedom.  This historical program lecture features; The NAACP with many tributes to men and women of this important time in America's history, including; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. 

 This historical program lecture features these three female mathematicians who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race: Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and other missions. as NASA supervisor and mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and  NASA engineer Mary Jackson

 This engaging 45-minute lecture, followed by 15 minutes of audience Q&A, spotlights the remarkable achievements of women who have excelled in aviation, space exploration, sports, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Showcasing inspiring stories from each category, throughout the presentation, we feature both well-known history makers, for example - Amelia Earhart and lesser-known trailblazers like Bessie Coleman. Celebrate the courage, determination, and brilliance of these extraordinary women who broke barriers and changed the world. Perfect for audiences of all ages, this inspirational program highlights how these remarkable women dreamed big, explored new frontiers, and many are the unsung heroines of American history.
