The Historic African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church of Yardley is the home of Gather Place, a non-profit organization - 501(c)(3). This historic landmark is reopened with a new mission under the conservatorship of Shirley Lee Corsey, and being restored through donations & grants.
Gather Place Museum is the very first African American Woman owned and operated,
American History Museum to open in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Its stated mission includes providing meaningful community-based events and activities by a more inclusive revelation about Yardley Borough, Bucks County and the state of Pennsylvania’s Quaker founders,
many forgotten people and neighborhoods, including African American
and Women’s history and heritage ~ "We bring history to life!"
We opened our doors on September 10, 2022. One of our permanent exhibits now showing displays the story about Yardley Borough’s Quaker founders, its diverse neighborhoods and families, its rich history that includes African Americans going back to Bucks County's origins.
We are a living history museum featuring exhibits, documents, photos, movie documentaries, and first-person history lessons, and historical reenactments! Bucks County's history and beyond, delivered in the tradition of the West African Griot (historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, genealogist, and/or musician.) We are open Saturdays and Sundays 12noon to 3pm and (M-F by appointment only). Gather Place is under management of Shirley Lee Corsey, Property Conservator and Gather Place Executive Director, this historic landmark is being restored through donations and grants. This location is the headquarters of Gather Place, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
The old African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church located here in the Historic District of Yardley Borough was built in 1877, by African Americans who crossed over the nearby Delaware River from Trenton, New Jersey to what was then named Yardleyville. It's been owned by African Americans ever since. The old A.M.E. Church of Yardley Borough is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This location is the headquarters of Gather Place, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We opened our doors on September 10, 2022, as the first African American and Women owned, operated, American History Museum in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. With a renewed mission under management of Shirley Lee Corsey, Property Conservator and Executive Director, this historic landmark is being restored through donations and grants. We are providing meaningful community-based events and activities by a more inclusive revelation about Yardley Borough, Bucks County and the state of Pennsylvania’s Quaker founders. So many of its forgotten people and neighborhoods, including African American and Women’s history and heritage museum is shared here ~
“We bring history to life!” Visit our permanent exhibit, see our periodic exhibits and activities including the a more inclusive review of the women's suffrage movement, and their beginnings with the Anti-slavery movement. Gather Place Museum is supported by documents, photos, filmed documentaries, first-person history lessons, and historical reenactments! Bucks County's history and beyond, told in the tradition of the West African Griots storytellers - All in a creative, educational, yet entertaining method.
