Honoring African American Civil War Soldiers buried at slate hill Cemetery

Date: Sunday, October 13th, 2024 | 12pm - 2pm | Meeting Place: Gather Place Museum, 188 South Canal Street, Yardley, PA 19067 | Then hop on our shuttle ride over to Slate Hill Cemetery, Yardley-Morrisville Road, Lower Makefield Township.

Experience this compelling two-hour educational and entertaining event hosted by Gather Place Museum, honoring the legacy of African American Civil War soldiers interred at the historic Slate Hill Burying Ground. Established in 1690,  Discover the resting place of prominent pioneers, including the Yardley family, and the oldest recorded headstone in Bucks County from 1698. Learn about the 1990 transfer of Slate Hill to Lower Makefield Township and its ongoing preservation as a site on the National Register of Historic Places

At Gather Place Museum ~ Meet Annie Harman: First-Person Presentation! Experience history come alive through a first-person presentation: Portraying the life and times of Annie Harman, the wife of Samuel Harman! Samuel Harman was an African American Civil War veteran of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), and is one of the six honored soldiers buried in Slate Cemetery. Learn about how they lived, worked and eventually died in "Yardleyville", further establishing facts and information about Yardley's overlooked and unknown African American lineage which traces back to its founders!

At Slate Hill Cemetery - Walk with us and learn about one of the oldest burial grounds in Bucks County. Nestled in a serene setting that dates back to the early Quaker settlers and their notable association with William Penn. Learn about this 1.4-acre historic cemetery established by Quaker settlers, with sections dating back to 1686 and 1721, and a third section added in 1788 for African Americans. Discover how Joshua Anderson, a local figure who built his mansion in 1763, donated land for a public graveyard after George Washington's 1776 Delaware River crossing.

At Slate Hill Cemetery ~ Explore with us about the stories of brothers William and Torbut Ganges, Jefferson Mosley, George Congo, Thomas Miller, and Samuel Harman. These soldiers are commemorated annually on Memorial Day by the American Legion with flags, gunfire salutes, and the playing of "Taps."
